How do I reactivate a previously deactivated employee's account in Tilt?
Restore a deactivated employee's access in a few clicks — and know when the sync handles it for you.
Quick answer
You can reactivate a previously deactivated employee's Tilt account from the Employees page in your HR dashboard. Toggle View Deactivated to see the list of deactivated users, then activate the one you need.
If your company uses an HR integration or SFTP file sync, employees are reactivated automatically when they're added back to the file — no manual action needed.
Who this applies to / Prerequisites
- You are an HR admin user at a Tilt customer.
- The employee was previously deactivated in Tilt and you need to restore their access.
Steps
- Log into Tilt as an HR admin.
- Click Employees in the left-hand navigation.
- Click the View Deactivated checkbox at the top of the page, directly to the right of the search bar. The list will switch to show deactivated users.
- Find the employee using the search bar, or scroll through the list.
- Click the three-stacked-dots icon at the right end of the employee's row.
- Click Activate.

- Confirm you want to activate the user. You'll see a confirmation banner at the top of the page.
What if it doesn't work
- If the employee doesn't appear in the deactivated list, they may either be already active or do not exist in your Tilt account at all. See How to Add a User Within Tilt.
- If you don't see the three-dot menu or the Activate option, confirm you're logged in as an HR admin (not a standard HR user).
- If you can't find the View Deactivated checkbox, make sure you're on the Employees page and scrolled to the top.
- If you reactivate an employee manually but they get deactivated again, check your SFTP or HR integration. Automated syncs may be removing them because they're not in your source file. Add them back to the file (or update their status in your HR system) to keep the reactivation in place.
Limits and exceptions
- Reactivating an employee restores their existing account with all previous data. It does not create a new account.
- Reactivated users can be deactivated again at any time. See How do I deactivate an employee's account in Tilt?
- If the employee's role, department, or contact details have changed since they were deactivated, update those separately in their profile. See Update User Details as an HR User.
- If your company uses an HR integration or SFTP file sync, employees are automatically reactivated in Tilt when they're added back to the source file. You don't need to manually reactivate them in these cases.
