How do I upload my import file in Tilt?

Attach your file, click Upload, and check back — here's how to run a real import once your CSV is ready.

Quick answer

To import a CSV, go to Org Settings > Uploads, click Upload File, select your document type (Employee Profile Import or Employee Pay History Import), attach your file, and click Upload. You'll see an "Upload Complete!" confirmation. You can keep working in Tilt and check back on the Uploads page once processing finishes.

Who this applies to / Prerequisites
  • You must be an HR user in Tilt.
  • Your file must be saved as a .csv. Tilt does not accept .xlsx or other file types.
  • Your column headers must match Tilt's template exactly (including asterisks) and stay in the template's order.
  • We recommend running a test upload first so no data is saved until your file is error-free. See How do I test my import file before uploading it in Tilt?
  • For pay history imports, employee profiles must already exist in Tilt before you upload a pay history file.
Steps
  1. Navigate to your HR Dashboard.
  2. Click Org Settings in the left navigation panel.
  3. Click the Uploads tab.
  4. Click the Upload File button.
  5. In the upload modal, select your document type — Employee Profile Import or Employee Pay History Import — and attach your file.
  6. Click Upload. You'll see a notification that your file is being uploaded, followed by an "Upload Complete!" confirmation.
  7. Continue using Tilt as normal. Check back on the Uploads page once processing has completed to confirm the results.
What if it doesn't work
  • The upload finished but some rows didn't import: Download the Import Error Log for row-level detail. See How do I download the Import Error Log in Tilt?
  • Rows failed with header errors: Your column headers don't match Tilt's template exactly, or the columns are out of order. Correct them and re-upload.
  • Pay history rows failed for an employee not found in Tilt: The employee's profile doesn't exist yet, or the work email doesn't match their Tilt profile. Import or correct the profile first, then re-upload.
  • The file won't upload at all: The file is not a .csv. Re-save it as .csv and try again.
Limits and exceptions
  • Only .csv files are accepted. Excel (.xlsx) and other formats will not import.
  • You must be an HR user to upload files. Other roles cannot import data.
  • Column headers must match Tilt's template exactly. Files with mismatched headers will not import.
  • All dates must be in YYYY-MM-DD format.
  • Employee profile data must exist in Tilt before pay history can be imported. Pay history rows for employees without Tilt profiles will not process.
