How does Tilt handle a Workers' Compensation (WC) leave?

Tilt's role in a Workers' Comp leave

Quick answer

Tilt does not track or manage Workers' Compensation claims directly — we rely on the employer (HR) to confirm claim status. If a WC claim is pending or approved, Tilt only tracks any job-protected leave (like FMLA or CFRA) running concurrently and does not create a pay calculation. If HR confirms a WC claim is denied, Tilt creates a pay calculation for the leave.

Who this applies to / Prerequisites

  • Any employee with a reported or suspected WC claim who also needs a leave of absence.
  • HR must confirm the WC claim status (pending, approved, or denied) directly with Tilt — Tilt cannot determine this on its own.

Steps: How Tilt processes a WC-related leave

  1. Employee reports a WC leave. Tilt reaches out to HR to confirm the details of the claim.
  2. HR confirms claim status. Tilt builds the leave based on whether the claim is pending, approved, or denied.
  3. If pending or approved: Tilt tracks any concurrent job-protected leave (FMLA, CFRA, etc.) but does not track the WC claim itself and does not create a pay calculation.
  4. If denied: Tilt creates a pay calculation, since a denied claim means there's no conflict with other leave-related payments.
  5. If the employee is not eligible for or has exhausted job-protected leave while a WC claim is pending or approved, Tilt initiates the ADA interactive process so HR can evaluate an accommodation request.

You'll know the process is working correctly when your leave record reflects the concurrent job-protected leave (if applicable) and, once claim status is confirmed, either a pay calculation (denied claims) or an ADA process kickoff (pending/approved claims without available job protection).

What if it doesn't work

  • No pay calculation appears for a pending or approved WC claim: This is expected — Tilt does not calculate pay for pending or approved WC leaves.
  • Employee has a WC claim but no job-protected leave available: Tilt automatically initiates the ADA process; HR makes the final decision on any accommodation.
  • HR hasn't confirmed claim status: Tilt cannot build accurate WC-related tracking until HR provides confirmation. Reach out to HR directly to confirm.
  • If none of these apply, contact your Leave Success Manager.

Limits and exceptions

  • Tilt does not track WC claims on their own — only concurrent job-protected leaves (FMLA, CFRA, etc.) are tracked.
  • Tilt does not create a pay calculation for pending or approved WC claims, under any circumstance.
  • Tilt creates a pay calculation only once HR confirms a WC claim has been denied.
  • Tilt has no visibility into the WC claims process and cannot estimate approval likelihood, dates, or payment amounts.
  • WC does not guarantee job reinstatement on its own — job protection comes from separate leave laws (FMLA, CFRA, etc.) running concurrently.
