What do the bell icon notifications in Tilt mean?

Five FMLA alerts, one bell icon — see what each notification means and when auto-designation stops applying.

Quick answer

The bell icon at the top right of the platform header (visible when logged into Tilt, on the HR dashboard) is used to share notifications about your company's leaves. A red dot will appear in the top right corner of the icon when there are new notifications that have not been seen.

Prerequisites: Must be an active HR user within Tilt.

Steps

  1. Log into Tilt as an active HR user.
  2. Locate the bell icon in the top right of the header on the HR dashboard.
  3. If a red dot appears in the top right corner of the icon, there are new unseen notifications.
  4. Click the bell icon to view the notifications below.

Notification

Explanation

[Employee Name] is FMLA eligible. (Parental Leaves)

Indicates that this employee is eligible for FMLA leave. This is determined by information added on the leave form and based off of hire date and how many hours this employee has worked.

[Employee Name] is eligible for FMLA leave. (Medical/Disability Leaves)

Indicates that this employee is eligible for FMLA leave. This is determined by information added on the leave form and based off of hire date and how many hours this employee has worked.

[Employee Name]'s FMLA leave has been approved. (Parental Leaves)

Indicates that this employee's FMLA leave has been approved.

Note: This applies to parental leaves that do not require a medical certification. Leaves requiring a medical certification, including medical/disability leaves and some parental leaves (pre-birth time, or when the employer requires a med cert for all pregnancies), are manually designated by the LSM based on the provided documentation.

[Employee Name] FMLA leave denial.

Indicates that this employee's FMLA leave is denied. This will be due to eligibility reasons not being met, such as tenure and/or hours worked.

[Employee Name] has submitted their FMLA medical certification form. (Medical/Disability Leaves)

Indicates that the employee has submitted their medical certification form to support their leave.

What if it doesn't work

  • Confirm you are an active HR user within Tilt. The bell notifications only appear for HR users.
  • If an expected FMLA approval notification hasn't appeared for a parental leave, check whether a medical certification is required on the plan (pre-birth time, or the company requires med certs for all pregnancies in Org Settings → Policies).
    • When a med cert is required, auto-designation stops and the LSM designates the leave manually after receiving the certification.
  • Make sure the bell notifications aren't being confused with the Activity Log on the HR dashboard and that's a separate feed with its own unread indicators.

Limits and exceptions

    • Parental leaves can require medical certification. An FMLA medical certification populates automatically on parental leave plans if the employee is taking pre-birth time, or the employer requires a med cert for all pregnancies (configurable in Org Settings → Policies). In those cases, Tilt stops auto-designation and the LSM manually determines FMLA approval — so the automatic approval notification does not apply.
  • FMLA Rights & Eligibility Notice logic: The notice indicates when a birthing parent needs to submit a medical certification.
  • The Outstanding Items, Recent Starts & Returns, and an Activity Log is separate from the bell notifications and should not be conflated with them.
